Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are one of the most common causes of disability, lost productivity, and pain. In fact, the majority of adults will develop an MSK issue at some point in their lives. There’s no getting around the fact that as we age, our risk of developing painful musculoskeletal disorders increases. These disorders involve the muscles, bones, and related tissues.
Whether acute or chronic, it’s important to treat MSK pain promptly and properly before the condition worsens and leads to even more serious problems (and bigger medical expenses) later on. Acute injuries are those that happen suddenly. Chronic injuries are related to overuse and develop gradually over time.
The most common acute MSK conditions include:
- Fractures
- Dislocations
- Sprains
- Strains
- Tendinitis
- Bursitis
Some chronic MSK conditions include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Carpal tunnel Syndrome
- Fibromyalgia
Common sports injuries include:
- Rotator cuff injury
- Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
- Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
- Runner’s knee
- Meniscal tear
- Achilles tendinitis
